PoCCo (people of color committee) aims to create a safe space and community for students of color on campus as well as incorporate non-PoC in the discussion about racism. We have made it our mission to celebrate different non-white cultures on campus and facilitate cultural exchange. We emphasize intersectionality and advocate for more than just anti-racism, addressing issues such as sexism, queerphobia, ableism, and other forms of discrimination that affect marginalized groups.
Since our establishment, we have hosted a variety of events, including:
- Screenings of movies, documentaries, and TV shows,
- Cultural dinners and workshops celebrating Ethiopia, Morocco, Palestine, and Vietnam,
- An active allyship lecture,
- Bi-semesterly "Spill the Chai" sessions—informal sharing circles where we discuss the role race plays in our lives while enjoying chai,
- Collaborations with various campus committees, and
- An end-of-year party featuring soju as a special drink.
Looking ahead, we are focused on strengthening the sense of community on campus by organizing informal borrels and potluck dinners. As PoCCo, we strive to build a committee that makes students of color at UCU proud.
